The arrival of the French

 

 

          The old world, Europe, was filled with diseases that had never before been experience in the new world. The arrival of Europeans was followed by the spread of old European diseases that wreaked havoc in the new world. For more information follow the link below:

The Fur Trade

 

 

          Fur was high in demand in the early days of the French colony. Rare furs from the new colony were popular all over Europe. Follow the link below to discover more:

Quebec and Montreal

 

 

          Quebec and Montreal started out as trading ports for traders and natives to trade food and fur. These trade ports would transform into major cosmopolitan cities that would lead in commerce for the benefit of the colony and the Mother Country, New France. That scurvy is actually a form of vitamin C deficiency!! Had it not been for native help, many Europeans would have died from scurvy during the early years of the colony.

 

 

 

          The relationship between the natives and the French of the New World was a difficult one. Though there were many battles against each other; the French and natives could also be allies in wars against the English from the Thirteen Colonies. For more information, see below:

Wars against the English

 

 

          While France and England were at war, so were the colonies of New France and The Thirteen Colonies. The two colonies fought many wars together which ultimately led to the end of French control in North America and would then leave New France under the control of the English. The treaty of Paris in 1763 was followed by Great Britain’s control over the people of what was formally known as New France and what would become Canada.
